This screen adaptation of the stage musical finds the Roman slave Pseudolus (Zero Mostel) scheming his way to freedom by playing matchmaker for his master's son, Hero, who is smitten with the beautiful Philia. However, things don't go according to plan. The complications that ensue involve blackmail, funny disguises ,and long-lost children. All the while Pseudolus desperately tries to keep up with his end of the bargain.

Jeff's nurse arranges with Elizabeth's publisher, Alexander Yardley (Sydney Greenstreet), for Jeff to spend the holiday at Elizabeth's Connecticut farm with her husband and child. However, the column is a sham, so Yardley hastens to arrange a publicity ploy by setting up single, non-domestic Elizabeth on a country farm.
