Prince Albert (Colin Firth) of England must take the throne as King George VI. However, he has a speech impediment. Prince Albert's wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) knows that the country needs her husband to be able to communicate successfully and hires Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian actor and speech therapist, to help him overcome his impediment. An incredible friendship develops between the two men, as Logue uses unconventional means to teach Prince Albert how to speak with confidence.

As the the King alternates between bouts of confusion and near-violent outbursts of temper, his doctors attempt the ineffective cures of the day. Meanwhile, Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren) and Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger (Julian Wadham) attempt to prevent the king's political enemies, led by the Prince of Wales (Rupert Everett), from overtaking the throne.

In 1836, General Santa Anna and his troops sweep across Texas to bring the emerging republic to its knees. General Sam Houston (Richard Boone) needs time to get his troops ready, so he orders Colonel William B. Travis (Laurence Harvey) to defend a small mission along Santa Anna's route at all costs. Colonel Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and Colonel Davy Crockett (John Wayne) arrive with some men to aid Travis’ small troop, but the odds grow against them.
