Smoke Signals

Smoke Signals (1998)

📅 Airs Saturday, Nov 1 at 9 p.m. | Encore Friday, Nov 7 at 11 p.m.

Starring: Adam Beach, Evan Adams, Irene Bedard, and Gary Farmer

Description:

The first feature film written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans, Smoke Signals tells the story of Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds-the-Fire as they travel from their Idaho reservation to collect the ashes of Victor’s father. Along the way, they confront painful memories, family secrets, and their shared history, discovering the healing power of storytelling and friendship in this deeply human coming-of-age tale.

🎬 Fun Facts

• What groundbreaking milestone did Smoke Signals achieve in Native American cinema? It was the first feature film to be written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans.

• In one memorable scene, Lucy drives in reverse. But what made that shot extra authentic? Actor Elaine Miles actually learned to drive backward for the scene herself, no stunt driver needed!

• The song “All My Relations” plays over the end credits. What famous tune from U.S. military history is it based on? It uses the Irish melody “Garryowen,” once the marching song of General Custer’s 7th Cavalry, the same tune said to have played before the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

• Why was Smoke Signals added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2018?  For being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” it is recognized for its groundbreaking Native storytelling and enduring impact.

• In a clever inside joke, Victor’s father asks him who his favorite Indian is, and Victor answers “Nobody.” What’s the hidden movie reference behind that line? Gary Farmer, who plays Victor’s father, starred as a character named Nobody in the 1995 film Dead Man.

Philomena

Philomena (2013)

📅 Airs Saturday, Nov 8 at 9 p.m. | Encore Friday, Nov 14 at 11 p.m.

Starring: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan and Sophie Kennedy Clark

Description:

Based on a true story, Philomena follows Philomena Lee (Dench) and journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan) as they search for the son she was forced to give up for adoption decades earlier. Their journey spans continents and decades, blending sharp wit and deep emotion as they uncover a heartbreaking past and the strength to forgive. With a masterful balance of humor and humanity, Philomena is a deeply moving story of faith, loss, and love.

🎬 **Fun Facts**

• Why did the Motion Picture Association initially rate Philomena “R,” and what happened afterward? For the ambiguous use of the “f-word,” which generally allows only one non-sexual utterance in PG-13 films. Producer Harvey Weinstein and Steve Coogan successfully appealed, and the rating was changed to PG-13 before the theatrical release.

• What real-life social issue does Philomena highlight, giving the film a darker undertone than originally intended? The widespread forced adoptions and abuse of children and unmarried mothers by the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland before, during, and after the 1950s.

• What unique technique was used in the flashbacks in Philomena? The film uses “home movie” style flashbacks, some created for the movie and some featuring footage of Philomena’s actual son.

• What major awards did the film Philomena (2013) garner at various award ceremonies, highlighting the exceptional performances of its cast and crew? It was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Judi Dench, Best Adapted Screenplay for Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, and Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat.  It also won BAFTA Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay (Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope) and Best Actress (Judi Dench).

• What connection does Peter Hermann, who appears in Philomena, have to classic Hollywood? He is married to Mariska Hargitay, the daughter of actress Jayne Mansfield, whose autographed photo appears in the convent scene.

Starring: David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, and Tom Wilkinson, Oprah Winfrey

Description:

Powerful, poignant, and deeply relevant, Selma chronicles Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, a defining moment in the fight for civil rights. Facing brutal opposition and immense personal risk, King and his allies press forward to secure equal voting rights for all Americans. Directed by Ava DuVernay, Selma is both a tribute to courage and a call to conscience, reminding us that the march toward justice continues today.

🎬 Fun Facts

• Which real-life tragic event is depicted in the opening scene of Selma? The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963, which killed four young girls: Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley.

• What surprising fact is there about the main cast of Selma, considering the film is set in the American South? The primary cast members, David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, and Tim Roth, are all British.

• Which civil rights leader served as a mentor and historical consultant to director Ava DuVernay and was moved to tears while observing a rehearsal at Rutledge Baptist Church? Congressman John Lewis.

• Which awards did Selma or its cast receive recognition for? Selma was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards, and David Oyelowo and Carmen Ejogo received widespread critical acclaim for their performances. The film earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Glory,” performed by John Legend and Common. Director Ava DuVernay became the first Black woman nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director.
