Breathless on Masterpiece Mystery!

Email share

I've heard "Breathless" called a cross between PBS's "Call the Midwife" and AMC's "Mad Men." After screening the three-part series, I can't think of a more perfect description.

Jack Davenport stars as the suave and brilliant London surgeon who seems to have it all, including a fair share of secrets. Zoe Boyle stars as his nurse who won't compromise her dignity for a chance at the easy life. Put these two together, plus several more familiar English faces in fascinating roles, and you won't want the scenes to end.

I'll admit, I'm not a regular watcher of "Mad Men." I don't have cable TV at home, and I don't generally like television and movies set in the 1960s. But there's something about "Breathless" that held my attention. No, not just held my attention, it captivated me. I usually multitask while I'm screening. But I wasn't very productive during this one. I couldn't take my eyes off it.

Episode 1 premieres this Sunday, August 24 at 8pm. I'm looking forward to hearing the reviews from our regular Masterpiece fans. Comment below if you watch it this Sunday. What do you think makes "Breathless" unique? What did you think of the setting? Who was your favorite character? I'd love to hear your opinion.

Here's a preview. Watch for the actress who played Downton Abbey's Lavinia Swire. She's only in this clip a couple of seconds, but she's hard to miss in the show. Suffice it to say, she's definitely NOT playing Lavinia Swire in this one.
