The new members of the War Veterans Commission gathered for the first time last week, and one of the key items on the agenda was abuse in veterans centers as brought to light by an investigative report by the Journal Record and the ONR. The Honor Flights program was started to take World War II veterans to the nation's capitol, so they might see the monuments built out of respect and gratitude for their generations' sacrifice. But with more and more veterans passing away due to their advanced age--an estimated thousand a day--the program is upping the number of trips to three a year. Reporter Lis Exon and photographer Ilea Shutler joined the June 6th Honor Flight--the 68th anniversary of D-Day.

Oklahoma doesn't just have a high incarceration rate--the number of elderly incarcerated on the rise. 1980 saw roughly 85 inmates over the age of 50 in Oklahoma. In 2011, that number had skyrocketed to nearly 4,000, and that number is only expected to rise. That's leaving prisons across the state scrambling to deal with it's aging inmates.
