This special Independence Day edition of Tulsa Times is dedicated to Oklahoma's World War II veterans.

About 100 World War II veterans recently returned home from the inaugural "Oklahoma Honor Flight" to Washington D.C. The members of the greatest generation, many of them in wheelchairs and all of them in their 80's and 90's, had the opportunity to visit and reflect at the memorials dedicated in their honor- including the National World War Two Memorial. 

They also had a chance to visit Arlington National Cemetery where they saw the Iwo Jima Monument and watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. 

Reporter Angela Rosecrans and photojournalist Edwin Wilson went along as Oklahoma's veterans experienced one of the most meaningful days in their lives.  Organizers say it's all part of the Honor Flight Network's mission of sending as many war heroes as possible to the nation's capitol.  Oklahoma Honor Flights is seeking funding for its second all-day trip to Washington, D.C., scheduled for October, 2010.

On the this week's Tulsa Times, we dedicate the entire program to Oklahoma music legend, Patti Page. The Claremore singer/songwriter was the best-selling female artist of the fifties and has sold over 100-million records.

In her hometown recently, Miss Page was presented an award by the Governor's office declaring April 29, 2010 "Patti Page Day". She gave a live performance in Claremore, Oklahoma.  And we went with her into the recording studio to tape a song for a tribute album to Dottie Rambo. 

Patti Page is one of America's true musical icons. In the course of her seven-decade recording career, she has become a living legend by selling more than 100 million records, making her one of the biggest selling female recording artists in history.

Patti's silky-smooth voice engulfed the airwaves during the '50s and '60s, providing her with a staggering 111 hits, 15 gold records and four gold albums. Patti became the first crossover artist to take country music out of the country and onto the pop charts with such million record sellers as "Mockin' Bird Hill," "I Went To Your Wedding," "Mister & Mississippi," and, of course, the legendary "Tennessee Waltz," which was #1 concurrently on all three charts (Pop, Country, & R&B) and sold more than 20 million copies. She was also the first artist to use multiple voice techniques on records and the only singer —male or female—to have had shows bearing her name on all three major television networks.

Patti's accomplishments remain unparalleled. Today, she continues to use her sweet, tranquil voice to touch the hearts of many generations and has recorded four new albums in the past six years, one of which received a Grammy. Patti still enjoys performing 50 select concerts throughout the year, sharing her incredible list of chart-topping classics with her fans.

Week of June 12:

Cathy Tatom takes us inside an Oklahoma prison where inmates are learning to be better fathers both from behind bars, and when they get out. It's an inexpensive program that's paying big social dividends.

We'll meet a 6-year old with an exceptional IQ and such a vast knowledge of geography he's being singled out for special mentoring to help him make the most of his impressive intellect.

And, we'll take a trip back in time aboard a vintage BNSF train with children from the Boys and Girls Club summer camps.
