February-April, 2009

When the first television station went on the air in Oklahoma, thirty to forty people crowded around a 12 inch screen at Oklahoma City's Municipal Auditorium every night. What they watched was amazing, invisible airwaves that crackled with life and brought the first fuzzy images into focus.

Oklahomans tuned in every day to see personalities that became pioneers of the new frontier of television.
OETA's award winning documentary series Stateline takes us back to those thrilling days of yesteryear when TV was live and local.

Stations in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Ada and Lawton broadcast local talk shows, cooking shows, news, weather and of course children's shows. To mention the names of programs like "Mr. Zing and Tuffy," "Ho-Ho' and Pokey," and "3-D Danny" is to watch the eyes of baby boomers light up with a glow of nostalgia.
Oklahoma was the first state west of the Mississippi to see color television in the 1950's, and the quality of productions here rivaled those in New York and Los Angeles.

The 50s, 60s, and 70s brought us "The Bud Wilkinson Show," "Wallace Wildlife," and "Lewis Meyer's Bookshelf." Teens tuned in to "Dance Party and "The Scene," while late night viewers looking for a thrill stayed up for "Shock Theater" and "Mazeppa Pompazoidi's Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting."

As television moves into high definition, join us for a look back at the way TV used to be.
