Pipeline Blog

Hello. My name is Holly. I'm part of a team of people who assemble the program schedule for OETA.

We look at the PBS national schedule, local programs and programs from other stations and distributors. We take in all that information and combine it with Member ballot feedback and viewer suggestions, and at the end of the month, I type a schedule for each of our four channels.

But enough about my job... Let's talk about what's on OETA!

Programming Adjustments During Festival

Written by HollySunday February 28, 2010 at 12:00am

2010FESTIVALLOGOIt's Festival time again! OETA's March pledge drive begins tomorrow, March 1st at 7pm. The funds raised during this time will enable OETA to purchase more programming for 2011.

We have a phenomenal number of new programs this year during our pledge drive. (Personally, I'm looking forward to the Michael Buble special on Tuesday, March 9th.) Look to our schedules to find a complete list of the programming coming in the next few weeks.

For those who are concerned about missing your favorite regular program, I've put together some explanations of where the programs have gone and when they're coming back. Here is the first installment...

Monday, March 1st

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW “Madison, WI” – This episode can be seen at 2am Tuesday morning, 4am Wednesday morning and 3am Friday morning. Or, if you don't want to stay up late or record it, you can watch it during primetime on 3/22 at 7pm.

DOLLEY MADISON: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE – This program is being recorded from the PBS feed and will be aired after the pledge drive on Monday, March 22 @ 8pm. If you don't want to wait that long, it can also be seen Wednesday morning, March 3rd at 2am.

MORRISTOWN: WHERE AMERICA SURVIVED -- Can be seen 1:30am Tuesday morning and 3:30am Wednesday morning.

LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE -- We'll pick back up where we left off after Festival, Monday, March 22 at 11pm.

WAITING FOR GOD -- We'll pick back up where we left off after Festival, Monday, March 22 at 11:30pm.

Tuesday, March 2

NOVA “Pluto Files” – This is a fun, new episode of NOVA. I hope you will record it during the overnight hours: 4am on Thursday or Saturday night at midnight. You can also watch it online on the PBS website starting Wednesday. I saw a screener and, I have to say, it might be my favorite episode ever.

FRONTLINE “The Suicide Tourist” -- Can be seen at midnight Tuesday night, 3am on Thursday morning and 1am on Sunday morning

INDENPENDENT LENS “The Eyes of Me” -- Can be seen at 2am on Thursday morning.

Wednesday, March 3

7pm                  FACES OF AMERICA #104 – This final episode of this series will air in its entirely tonight. We will not have pledge programming during this hour.

8pm                  NATIONAL PARKS #106 – We will also air this final episode in its entirely, but we'll have an opportunity to become an OETA member at the end (with a special gift for those who join!).

Thursday, March 4

THIS OLD HOUSE HOUR – PBS is feeding new episodes of this series during the entire pledge drive. We’re recording them and we’ll play them after Festival, starting March 25. If you can't wait that long, they can be seen during the overnight hours. Check the online schedule for specific times.

GALLERY/STATELINE – Will return after Festival

GLOBE TREKKER – Will return after Festival

SOUNDSTAGE – This series is on mid-season hiatus and should return in June.

AUSTIN CITY LIMITS – Currently feeding old episodes. We’ll put ACL back in the schedule after Festival.

Programming Nuggets

Written by HollyWednesday February 17, 2010 at 9:51am

BWOETA's "Fesitval" pledge drive begins in less than two weeks! The dates are March 1st through March 21st. We have lots of new, exciting programs this year -- concerts with Michael Buble, Pat Boone, Chet Atkins and many more... a new Rick Steves program... and several new self-help programs. Good stuff!! More information on Festival coming soon.

New episodes of DOCTOR WHO begin on May 15th with "Voyage of the Damned," starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue.

Many of you have heard about a program called FOR THE LOVE OF LIBERTY: THE STORY OF AMERICA'S BLACK PATRIOTS. This program isn't from PBS but rather American Public Television. We've recorded it but we haven't been able to schedule it yet. It consists of two 2-hour episodes. Let me tell you, finding a place for a 2-hour special is hard enough, but finding a place for four hours of non-PBS programming is really tough. If we preempt our regular programs like ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, WASHINGTON WEEK or LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE, viewers are understandably upset. Such is the difficulty of programming a public television station. We can't please everyone, but we'll keep trying!

FRONTLINE will be taking a look at the earthquake in Haiti and trying to find whether the chaos in the aftermath could have been avoided and how to do better in the future. That's coming March 30th.

A couple of new local series begin in April. TWO WHEEL OKLAHOMA features a couple of motorcycle enthusiasts who take viewers on two-wheel rides across our state. It begins April 4th on Sunday mornings. And on April 11th, COWBOYS IN TALL GRASS begins on Sunday evenings. This series brings alive Oklahoma's rich history with old photos, old film and gifted storytellers.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, MASTERPIECE presents "The Diary of Anne Frank." The clip I saw of this made me cry almost immediately.. and it wasn't even a sad part. It's just that well produced. You shouldn't miss it.

Shakespeare enthusiasts, get a pen and write this down... Wednesday, April 28th 7pm to 10:30pm... GREAT PERFORMANCES presents "Hamlet from the Royal Shakespeare Company." This edgy adaptation stars David Tennant (of DOCTOR WHO fame) as the tortured Danish prince and Patrick Stewart as Claudius. I can't wait!!

In Performance at the White House

Written by HollyWednesday February 10, 2010 at 3:54pm

whitehouseThe show must go on... and it did!

Despite the blowing snow and impending blizzard conditions, the cast and crew of IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE put together a fabulous performance of "A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement."

Press from The Washington Post, The New York Times and USA Today managed to attend yesterday's festivities, and all have published articles out today (or posted very late last night on their website). You might have seen them appear in your RSS feeds! Here's a sample of what was said:

It was truly a momentous occasion, as Bob Dylan performed "The Times They Are A-Changin'" for the 1st time in 30 years for a live audience...not to mention it was his first-ever performance at the White House. Joan Baez called for a singalong from the invited audience, and got one, on “We Shall Overcome."  Yolanda Adams, a gospel luminary, sang “A Change Is Gonna Come,” while Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson traded lines on “People Get Ready.” Natalie Cole sang “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free,” and President Obama joined the closing all-star singalong for “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” often known as the black national anthem.  Your viewers are in for an unforgettable treat!

IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE "A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement" airs tomorrow night, February 11 at 7pm on OETA.

We Heard the Bells

Written by HollyTuesday February 2, 2010 at 11:29am

fluWE HEARD THE BELLS: THE INFLUENZA OF 1918 is new documentary for public television premiering on OETA Wednesday night, February 10th at 10pm. It explores the history of pandemic flu and its implications...for today and the future

WE HEARD THE BELLS explores the personal and family experiences of a diverse group of Americans during the influenza pandemic of 1918, including one survivor from Sequoyah County in Oklahoma. The history of the flu unfolds as these survivors tell their stories. Their memories frame key questions that drive the continuing search for answers to help us weather the current H1N1 pandemic and future flu pandemics.

The program is narrated by award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson.
