A recent check of the local prison system showed the numbers haven't changed much. ONR's Cathy Tatom went searching to find out why.

Diversity in Oklahoma
Oklahoma is one of the most ethnically and racially diverse states in the U.S.; not just one group, but a combination of many. American Indians, African Americans, Asian and Pacific Islanders, and Latinos comprise one-fourth of the state's population. And that segment is getting larger - 47% of Oklahoma public school students are non-white. So today, we discuss diversity and Oklahoma's growing minorities, with our guests: Colonel Stan Evans, former Dean of Dtudents at the OU College of Law and former member of the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission; Jana Lewis Harkins, advocate for African-American and women's rights; Ruben Aragon, President and CEO of the Latino Community Development Agency; and Sarah Adams-Cornell, Native American advocate and member of the Oklahoma City Choctaw Tribal Alliance.

On this episode of the ONR, voters have been urged to 'get out the vote,' and some are doing so earlier than others as early voting grows in popularity. But it's having a profound impact on the campaign season and it's length. Campaign season also means campaign speeches and ads. We take a look at the world of political operatives and their role in the world of politics. One of the groups trying to be reached by those campaign messages this year? Hispanics. They now are the largest minority in the United States, and as such are a strong voting block. In our Oklahoma Forum excerpt, we discuss the Latino community and voting. Then our reporter Cathy Tatom visits 'Little Mexico' in Heavener, Oklahoma, to see the impact of a new Latino population in the town. Plus, business news, lessons from the Dust Bowl, and silo art projects, on this ONR.

From the different tribes that span the state to the scores of settlers from every corner of the map that put down roots in the state's red clay, Oklahomans have some colorful heritage. But some are celebrating that heritage a little more than others. Two mechanics in Tulsa are actively celebrating their Scottish background--at least until the heatwave breaks.

On this week's ONR, schools across the country are growing more diverse, and it's causing unique problems for some Oklahoma educators. Clean energy abounds in the Sooner state, or it's trying to. Lawmakers and leaders continue to push for compressed natural gas vehicles, and while Oklahoma is eighth in the country for wind energy production, the loss of a tax credit could leave a booming industry blowing in the wind. Out of the ashes of the state's recent wildfires, communities come together to help students left homeless from the flames, and one program is helping rural residents better fireproof vulnerable houses. Plus, a trip to Tulsa's historic Greenwood District, an exploration of a tribe's history, and a look at the high-flying women of the Museum of the 99's on this ONR.
