Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) broadcasting legend and host of the OETA Movie Club, B.J. Wexler, is being honored with his own celebrity sandwich by Oklahoma City’s Slaughter’s Hall restaurant during the month of July. The sandwich will be officially unveiled at a launch party at the restaurant Wednesday, July 13 at 6 p.m.
The sandwich, popcorn chicken tossed in Buffalo sauce, is a nod to the OETA Movie Club theme. The popcorn chicken pays tribute to the iconic popcorn bucket featured each week on the OETA Movie Club, while the Buffalo sauce honors Wexler’s Buffalo, New York, roots. The sandwich was created by Slaughter’s Hall chef Jonathan Groth and will be available on the restaurant’s menu following the launch party and throughout the month of July.
Born and raised in Buffalo, Wexler planned to follow his father Sam’s footsteps into real estate. However, at the University of Buffalo, B.J.’s plans to join the family business were put on permanent hold when he began working for his college radio station, which would lead to a 50-year career in broadcasting.
In the fall of 1976, B.J. arrived in Oklahoma as program director for KTOK Radio. In addition to his daily radio show, B.J. also produced the University of Oklahoma pre- and postgame football broadcasts. B.J. joined OETA in 1983, first as co-host of the Festival and Augustfest pledge drives, then, of course, as host of the OETA Movie Club. Wexler and his wife Anne have two children, Dave Wexler and Cindy Costa both of Oklahoma City.
The OETA Movie Club features classic films, celebrity photos submitted by Oklahomans from across the state, little-known movie trivia and fan-favorite fresh popcorn. The show has been a Saturday night staple on OETA for more than 25 years and is among the most popular of all OETA programs.
Slaughter’s Hall will donate a portion of the proceeds from the Wexler celebrity sandwich to the OETA Foundation to benefit OETA.
