Settlement Reached in School Discipline Probe

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City Public Schools and the U.S. Department of Education have agreed to a settlement regarding the district's disproportionate discipline of black students.

The Education Department announced Wednesday that the two reached a settlement agreement requiring the district to better monitor disciplinary actions, invest in disciplinary training and take other corrective measures.

The department says it conducted an investigation concluding the Oklahoma City district's black students were "significantly overrepresented in disciplinary actions."

The investigation found black students accounted for 42 percent of in-school suspensions during the 2014-15 school year, while comprising 26 percent of the student population.

The school district says it's forming a plan to implement the required changes and appreciates the department's efforts to identify and correct the issues.
