What?
Digital television (DTV) is a new broadcasting technology that will transform your television viewing experience. DTV offers movie-quality picture and sound. It also offers multiple programming choices. It is a more efficient, flexible technology that most countries already use.
Why?
By federal mandate, all U.S. TV stations must broadcast in digital and turn off their analog services. The government will auction off the broadcast spectrum space currently used by analog channels for telecommunications services such as public safety and advanced wireless communications.
When?
OETA and other local and national stations, such as NBC, CBS and ABC, already air digital television programming. Most stations, including OETA, ceased analog broadcasting from its transmitters on February 17, 2009. Rural translators will switch to digital-only broadcast in Fall 2009.
Who?
If you watch TV on a digital television set, or if you subscribe to cable or satellite, you do not need to take action. If you watch television over-the-air on an analog TV set, you need to take action. All analog televisions that are not connected to satellite or cable will need a set-top converter box. Viewers watching TV through a converter box or digital television set must RESCAN periodically to pickup new channels.
How?
 |
Keep Your Current TV Set.
Don’t panic - you will not have to buy a new television set. Analog-only TVs will also continue to work as before with gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players and similar products. |
 |
Check Your Antenna
Digital signals may not reach as far as the analog signal, so after Feb. 17, some over-the-air viewers may have trouble receiving OETA and other channels. Because the digital signal does not have the same strength as analog, you may need a new antenna. |
 |
Rescan, Rescan, Rescan!
Simply rescan your converter box or digital television to acquire new digital channels. Rescan your converter box or digital TV set once a month to receive new channels. Some stations will continue to add new channels after the digital deadline. Rescanning monthly will ensure you receive all of the channels available in your area.

Over-the Air Viewers: Purchase a Converter Box
If you view programming for free, over the air on an analog television and use an outside antenna or indoor antenna (rabbit ears), you will need a digital-to-analog set-top converter box connected to each analog TV in your house. You won’t see full digital quality on an analog TV, but you’ll still get the programming you had been receiving, along with new channels, including OETA OKLA. You can purchase the boxes at electronic retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Target and Wal-Mart.
